“Despite extensive research in recent years, the evaluation of the extent of brain injury after cardiac arrest and resuscitation remains difficult. The team ‘hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy’ of Dr. Christoph Leithner has contributed to improvement of current knowledge of this subject in two projects. A sutdy on histopathological analysis of brain injury has evaluated in detail the relationsship between results of routine diagnotics such as EEG and brain CT and neuronal injury on a cellular level. In a second project, an automated, quantitative evaluation of the extent of brain injury from brain CTS was developed. Both projects and further ongoing projects will contribute to an improved assessement of the extent of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy early after cardiac arrest and resuscitation.”
