"Through this personnel support and release from clinical tasks, protocols for establishing organoid models from pancreatic cancer tissue and a biobank were established in connection with a grant from the Berlin Cancer Society for material resources. The models were histopathologically verified and examined for their in-vitro treatment response. Using these models, we have already been able to show similarities between in-vitro testing and clinical presentation. Using the established protocols, the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin was able to qualify as one of six Germany-wide centers for the first prospective organoid-based study for resected pancreatic cancer patients (UNITEPANC).
Furthermore, one of the largest retrospective databases for pancreatic cancer with 2,323 cases was processed and the influence of inflammatory and metabolic parameters on overall survival in patients with pancreatic cancer was examined. The retrospectively collected data will be used to develop Al-based algorithms and, in addition to the organoids, to derive Al-based treatment decisions for pancreatic cancer."
