This project sought to assess the current clinical guidelines and the impact of statin use for primary and secondary prevention in people living with dementia (PwD). Many of the reviewed guidelines did not offer recommendations for statin use in PwD due to insufficient evidence. Through our analysis of a substantial cohort of nursing home residents, we aimed to address this evidence gap by demonstrating consistent benefits of statins in terms of reducing all-cause mortality, both among individuals with and without dementia. Our findings suggest that statin therapy can be safely continued in nursing home residents with dementia to mitigate the risk of all-cause mortality. Moving forward, the collaborative research teams at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Johns Hopkins University intend to sustain this successful partnership in future endeavors. We aim to explore further the risks and benefits of statin use in multimorbid older adults through ongoing joint projects.
